Cyber Threat Brief — October 12 2026
1. CyberXero — AI-run initial access broker hitting WordPress, Redis, and Ukrainian energy
TL;DR: SOCRadar found the live working directory of CyberXero, a Russian-speaking access broker that uses 51 Claude Code agents and a PentAGI-driven Cobalt Strike server to mass-compromise WordPress sites and Redis servers and to work Ukrainian energy targets. Block its eight infrastructure addresses, then search WordPress for administrators named wp2_ plus eight hex characters.
What’s New:
- SOCRadar published the report on Oct 6 and mainstream coverage followed on Oct 12. The actor was still active at publication.
- One automated run scanned 4,708 sites, reached 429 WordPress admin panels, and planted 32 webshells in 61 seconds.
- The entry point is wp2shell (CVE-2026-63030 and CVE-2026-60137), which Wordfence has seen mass-exploited since July, plus Support Board SQL injection CVE-2026-4815.
- Four Ukrainian organizations lost data, including 564,073 subscriber records from a Kharkiv heating provider. Seven more energy and utility entities were under reconnaissance.
Actionable Intel
| Artifact | Type | ATT&CK | Log Source | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
WordPress user login matching wp2_[0-9a-f]{8} with the administrator role | Rogue account | T1136.001 | WordPress wp_users table / WP activity log | Run SELECT user_login, user_registered FROM wp_users WHERE user_login REGEXP '^wp2_[0-9a-f]{8}$' on every site. Any row means the site was compromised by wp2shell; delete the user and treat the host as breached. |
Plugin folder /wp-content/plugins/wp2shell_[0-9a-f]{8}/ | Webshell path | T1505.003 | Web access log / file integrity monitoring | Search access logs for request paths containing /wp-content/plugins/wp2shell_ and list folders on disk matching that name. Remove the folder only after imaging the site. |
POST to /?rest_route=/batch/v1 or /wp-json/batch/v1 | Exploit traffic | T1190 | Web server / WAF access log | Search for POSTs to either batch URL form since 2026-07-17 and alert on any from the internet. Upgrade WordPress to 6.9.5 or 7.0.2 or later, or block both batch URL forms at the WAF. |
SHA-256 a5ae0aab352871bc0b038b3aa43b03eb223425628c884af7b9fc592cd34eb86c (WSO-Shell.php) | IOC | T1505.003 | EDR / FIM file hash | Sweep web roots for this hash. SOCRadar says this WSO build, obfuscated with R00t-Shell.com 2.0.15, was undetected on VirusTotal. |
Unexpected key in /root/.ssh/authorized_keys on a host running internet-exposed Redis | Persistence | T1098.004 | auditd / FIM / Redis network logs | Diff authorized_keys on every Redis host against your known keys, and search Redis traffic for SLAVEOF, REPLICAOF, or CONFIG SET dir with /.ssh. Bind Redis to localhost or require auth. |
Windows service named UpdSvc whose binPath runs a PowerShell download from http://42.193.227.214:8033/ | Persistence | T1543.003 | Windows System 7045 / Sysmon 13 | Search service-creation events for service name UpdSvc or an ImagePath containing 42.193.227.214. A hit is a Cobalt Strike beacon; isolate the host. |
URL pattern http://42.193.227.214:8033/[a-z0-9]{13} | Stager URL | T1059.001 | Proxy log / PowerShell 4104 | Search proxy logs and script block text for 42.193.227.214:8033. Block the address on all ports, including beacon port 1002 and staging port 8044. |
IP 46.21.250[.]135 | IOC | T1583.003 | Firewall / proxy | Block it. It is the actor’s own workstation and served the open directory. |
IPs 45.88.106[.]78 (scanner) and 45.88.106[.]2 (provisioning) | IOC | T1595.002 | Web access log / firewall | Search inbound web logs for 45.88.106.78 to find sites it scanned, and block both addresses. |
IPs 49.234.12[.]182 (payload staging) and 42.193.100[.]94 (Redis exploitation) | IOC | T1105 | Firewall / Redis host netflow | Block both, and search Redis hosts for inbound connections from 42.193.100.94 or outbound fetches from 49.234.12.182. |
Detection
| Source | Rule | Gap |
|---|---|---|
| Splunk ESCU | None — verified | No wp2shell, Redis replication, or WSO analytic. Windows Cobalt Strike PowerShell Loader matches one fixed loader string that SOCRadar did not publish. |
| Elastic | Partial — PHP File Creation in WordPress Plugin Directory; Potential Redis CONFIG SET SSH Authorized Key Injection | The first needs Elastic Defend on the Linux web host. The second needs Redis protocol capture and does not match SLAVEOF replication. |
| Sigma | Partial — WordPress Wp2shell Webshell Plugin Access; WordPress Wp2shell REST Batch Endpoint Exploitation; WordPress Wp2shell Exploitation Tool User-Agent | The batch rule only matches the rest_route= form with a 207 response, so it misses /wp-json/batch/v1. Nothing covers wp2_ accounts or UpdSvc. |
Detection index: ESCU 1b2142f (2026-10-09) · elastic detection-rules 195f15c (2026-10-09) · SigmaHQ 8a48134 (2026-10-06). Mirrors were not refreshed today.
Hunt hint: Start with the database query for wp2_ administrators, because it catches the compromise even when access logs have rolled. For each hit, pull web logs for the 24 hours around user_registered and look for the batch POST and the first request to wp2shell_. On Redis hosts, check authorized_keys modification times and the Redis MONITOR or slow log for replication commands. If you run Ukrainian energy or utility assets, also search VPN and email logs for the eight infrastructure addresses, since that pipeline was manual and may not leave the WordPress artifacts.
